Difference between Cigarette Pants and Straight Pants

by MAYILSWAMY KRISHNASAMY on September 04, 2024

Women in India wear pants in different styles. Depending on the occasion, venue, comfort, or fashion preferences, the style varies from one pant to another. For example, for work, they prefer smart casual pants like lycra straight pants or cotton trousers. For ethnic occasions, they prefer churidar pants. For activities or dance performances, they choose salwar or patiala pants.

However, there is a common misconception that cigarette pants and straight pants are selfsame styles. But that’s not true. They may seem similar but they are two different pant styles. This short blog post intends to educate you on the major differences between women's cigarette pants and straight pants.

Straight-leg pants

  • Features
  • Straight-leg or simply straight pants, as the name implies, feature a straight. From the waist or hip portion to the bottom hem, the cut is straight. This gives more room to the legs for free movement and a straight-leg silhouette. The notable aspect of these pants is that they maintain the same leg width from top to bottom without any narrowing or tapering.

  • Types
  • When it comes to the material or fabric of pants, there are many types—straight pant cotton, lycra, linen, wool, satin, silk, etc.  On the other hand, concerning the length of these pants, there are three types—cropped, ankle-length, and full-length styles. Besides, there are some unique varieties, like metallic-shaded, Hakoba-laced, and denim-like straight-leg pants.

  • How to style them?
  • From casual salwar or kurti tops to formal shirts or tunics, you can wear any woman’s tops, as they complement each other well. Wearing a dupatta or shawl is optional and you can decide on it. Nevertheless, every woman must own at least two to three straight pant combo to mix and match all their tops.

    Cigarette or pencil pants

  • Features
  • Ideally, these pants are a type of straight-leg pants, making a difference in the leg width. Yes, these pants have a narrow width from thigh to leg region, giving a chic leg silhouette to the wearer. Still, they are not close to skinny pants where there is less or no width between the legs and pants.

In other words, these pants feature high waists, slender thighs/legs, and narrowed-down ankles without forgoing the leg movement. As a mandatory functional element, side pockets are always included in these pants. But not all straight pants may have similar side pockets.

  • Types
  • As usual, cotton cigarette pant set are widely used by women in the country for their breathability, long-day comfort, and skin-friendliness. But there are also other fabrics, like satin, wool, linen, lycra, and sometimes denim or leather. As far as length is concerned, these pants are mostly right above the ankles and there are no full-length or cropped types in these pants.

  • How to style them?
  • Like straight pants, cigarette pants are also versatile. They are considered casual, formal, and even ethnic. So, you can pair them with kameez, kurti tops, anarkali gowns, shirts, tunics, etc. Again, the dupatta is optional. Here is the link to buy the cigarette pants combo
