by MAYILSWAMY KRISHNASAMY on August 29, 2024

Patiala salwar pants, or simple patiala pants, are a specific type of trousers that Indian women wear regularly. Be it girls going to colleges or universities or women going to offices, they prefer wearing these pants for comfort and durability. Before we plunge into the different types of patiala pants for women, let’s touch a little on their history and features.

The origination of patiala pants

Patiala is a city located in the north Punjab region of India. Decades ago, the king of Patiala wore a royal suit that looked like a Pathani suit with a salwar and a trouser. These salwar trousers were tailored loosely with multiple folds, all joining at the bottom hem. Owing to its aesthetic look and comfy feel, it became famous among the people. Over time, both men and women began wearing them and especially when summers scorched, women wore only these patiala salwar pants. Later, as trends passed by, men stopped wearing them and they turned out to be women's patiala pants

Characteristics of these special pants

  • They are loosely stitched to give all-day comfort.
  • It has more number folds pleated to look elegant.
  • It uses 2X material or fabric when compared to sewing a regular salwar or straight pants.
  • The pants are tailored in two different parts: the belt portion with a drawstring for adjusting the hip size and the pleat portion with folds and hem at the bottom.

Best patiala pants and their types

These Punjabi pants are categorized into different types based on certain factors taken into consideration.

  • Pleats or folds

    1. Full-Patiala: As the name implies, these pants have the maximum number of pleats, giving them the ideal primitive Panjabi trouser look. In other words, a full patiala pant is considered the regular Punjabi patiala salwar pant.
    2. Semi-Patiala: These pants have a limited number of pleats without forgoing their function—the flawless freedom of movement.
    3. Dhoti-Patiala: Unlike patiala pants, dhoti pants are mostly preferred by men. Their pleats start from the front to the back side of the pants, giving a proper U-shape to every fold.

  • Design

    1. Printed: These pants have designs or patterns printed. The prints could either be all over or in the form of multiple butta.
    2. Plain: Plain patiala pants are solid-color pants without any self-design or patterns printed on them. As most women’s tops, like kurtas or kameez, come printed, plain pants are found to be the perfect match.

  • Material

    1. Silk: Silk-made Punjabi pants are preferred for ethnic or grand occasions. They are soft and shining in nature. When tailored with golden borders or embroidery, they look stunning.
    2. Viscose or Rayon: This material is made of a silk substitute, i.e., wood pulp synthetic fibers. The pants are soft and smooth.
    3. Cotton: Unlike other materials, cotton is made of 100% pure natural fibers that are lightweight, soft, and breathable in nature. Because of these features, cotton patiala pants for women are widely accepted and commonly used in India. Moreover, they are skin-friendly and cause no harm to the environment.

  • Ensemble

    1. Patiala salwar dupatta set: This ensemble encompasses the salwar top, matching patiala trousers, and the dupatta. This is a complete set offered to women. Most women prefer this wholesome set as everyday wear. Instead of a salwar, even a kameez or kurta can blend into this suit set.
    2. Patiala dupatta set: With changing clothing preferences, clothing brands have begun selling these kinds of sets for Indian women. This encompasses only the patiala pants and the matching dupatta, without any topwear. With these sets, women can pair any of their tops or kurtas, either complementing or contrasting, based on their style choices.
